Newcastle and Burnley are in talks to sign James Trafford

Burnley and Newcastle United are negotiating over a possible signing of goalkeeper James Trafford. The Premier League team has designated Trafford as a player of interest and is prioritizing adding a new goalkeeper during the transfer season. Burnley and Newcastle have started talking, with Newcastle estimating the player’s worth to be between £15 and £18 million.

Following their relegation to the Championship, Burnley is aware that several members of their team would be leaving, and as a result of their lost broadcast revenue, they must raise money. Trafford signed a contract of up to £19 million to join Burnley from Manchester City last summer. Before Arijanet took his spot, he made 28 Premier League outings for the Lancashire club. Before Arijanet Muric took his place for the final ten games of the 2023–24 season, he made 28 Premier League appearances for the Lancashire club.

The 21-year-old was an unexpected addition to England’s initial 33-man roster for the European Championship, but he was later left off as participating teams in the German competition had to reduce to 26 players by Friday, June 7. Trafford, who never made a senior game for City, came through their youth systems and played prominently in their younger teams.

He played 52 appearances in all competitions while on loan with League One’s Bolton Wanderers during the 2022–2023 season. He kept 26 clean sheets there. In addition, he was a standout member of the England Under-21 team that won the European Championship the previous summer. The team went the entire competition without giving up a goal, and in the championship match against Spain, he saved a late penalty.
